In 2026, everyone is running AI agents in the terminal. Even people who don't know how to code. Ghostty is the best terminal I've used on Mac, but it has no settings screen. Not one button. So how do you change anything?
I wrote one script that does it all for you. It's called Boo, and it's free.
I build useful things like this with AI every week.
Subscribe on YouTubeBy the end of this, your terminal will look like mine, and you'll change themes, the prompt, the splash screen and the transparency with one short command each. No hand-editing config files.
What you need
- A Mac or Linux computer.
- Ghostty. Go to the site, hit Downloads, and install it.
- Zsh, plus
curl,bashandtar.
On Linux, install Ghostty and Zsh first, and run the commands below from Zsh, not Bash. The README has the details.
Install Boo
Open Ghostty, paste this and hit enter:
curl -fsSL https://boo.ansub.co/install.sh | bash
source ~/.zshrc
That's it. Mine downloaded with zero errors, and it tells you the next step. Right away my terminal looked 100 times better than before.
Don't worry about losing your old setup. The installer makes a backup before it replaces anything.
Now run this to check everything is fine:
boo doctor
It runs a few checks and tells you if anything needs fixing. If it finds a problem, run boo doctor fix, then boo doctor again.
Pick a theme
This is the easiest way:
boo theme select
It opens a list of every theme, dark and light, with a live preview on the right. Press Enter to apply one, or Esc to cancel.
If you already know the theme you want, just type its name:
boo theme fallout
When I picked a light theme, I had to reload Ghostty to see it. You can type:
boo reload --unsafe
Or press Cmd+Shift+, on Mac (Ctrl+Shift+, on Linux). It does the same thing.
Want to see all the names first? Run boo theme list. The README also describes each one.
Make your own theme
There are two ways. The first is one command. Give it a name and an accent color:
boo theme create --name synthwave --accent '#ff3ea5'
Hit enter, reload, and your theme is applied.
The second way is guided. Just run:
boo theme create
It asks you a few questions, like the accent color and the name, then applies it. I picked a really funky color so I could tell it apart.
Don't like it? Delete it:
boo theme delete synthwave
Make the prompt look better
The prompt is the line where you type. You can make it look much nicer:
boo prompt set omp
Now mine shows the CPU, the time, my name and the folder I'm in. Everything looks a bit better.
This one needs oh-my-posh installed. If you don't want that, use the built-in one instead:
boo prompt set native
Change the splash screen
When I open a new window, it shows the Apple logo. You can change that art:
boo splash saturn
To see what else there is:
boo splash list
You can also use your own art from a text file, remove the splash completely, or go back to the default:
boo splash custom ~/my-art.txt
boo splash none
boo splash reset
Change the transparency
You might notice the window is a little see-through. You can adjust that too:
boo opacity glass
That set mine to 0.92. If you want no transparency at all:
boo opacity solid
Now it's at 100%, so you can't see anything behind it. Or pick your own number. With this one, it's way more clear:
boo opacity 0.40
One line, and it shows up in Ghostty right away.
Things to know
- Check your setup anytime.
boo statusshows your current theme, splash, prompt and opacity. - If
booisn't found, runsource ~/.zshrc, open a new Ghostty window, and try again. - If a theme or opacity doesn't change, reload with Cmd+Shift+,. On Mac, opacity sometimes needs a full restart of Ghostty.
- On Linux, transparency and blur depend on your desktop. You may also want a Nerd Font for the prompt icons.
- Want to undo it all? Run
boo uninstall. It puts your old Ghostty config back if a backup exists.
Everything else is in the Boo README on GitHub.
